A Review of the Proceedings at Paris during the last summer, 1791.
Fennell, James.

Including an exact and particular account of the memorable events, on the 20th of June, the 14th of July, the 10th of August, and the 2d of September: with Observations and Reflections on the Characters, Principles and Conduct of the most conspicuous persons concerned in promoting the suspension and dethronement of Louis the Sixteenth. Printed in London for E. and T. Williams, No. 13; Strand. viii, 492pp. The sole edition. James Fennell, 1766-1816, was an English actor, who made his first appearance in 1787 at the Edinburgh theatre. In the summer of 1791 he travelled to Paris during the period when Louis the XVI’s powers were suspended by the National Assembly. His original design was to stage a play ‘The Picture of Paris’. It went into rehearsal in the winter of 1791, but was never performed. Educated at Eton, and Trinity College Cambridge, and with an early training in law, Fennell was well equipped to offer an important and detailed first-hand account of the momentous events unfolding before him. In 1794 he emigrated to America, publishing An Apology for the Life of James Fennell (Philadelphia, 1814). Post octavo. (8in x 5in). This volume is in excellent condition. It is bound in three quarter calf with matching cloth. No shelf wear. The spine has gilt rulings, titling and ornaments. Text clean throughout save for two short marginal notes and two short marginal lines; all in a very old hand. All edges coloured. This looks to be an early twentieth century rebind when owned by Fritz Ponsonby of the Grenadier Guards (1867 - 1935) who became the first Baron Sysonby, whose the engraved bookplate is on the pastedown and who wrote the definitive three volume history of the Grenadier Guards. A very scarce book. I can only find a single copy for sale on the internet at £605 in the USA.

The Art of Heraldry; an Encyclopedia of Armory.
Fox-Davies, Arthur Charles

Published by T.C. & E.C. Jack, 1904. Folio. Decorated cloth, pp. viii + 504; 153 plates, 106 coloured and more than 1135 engravings in the text. Neatly re-backed in a co-ordinated cloth, a little rubbed and slightly stained, with the original spine laid down on a hollow back. It is extremely solidly bound. There are five pages from another work tipped in as is an original book review from 1904 (inside back cover). A former owner was a member of The British Society of Master Glass Painters and there are a few very neat light pencil notes here and there. The book is supplied with a folder of other related cuttings, etc., found in the pages. This book was apparently produced in just 500 copies and has been reproduced three times. I can find no mention of plates in the 1968 edition. The 1976 edition contained all the plates but none in colour. The 1986 edition has only 129 plates. The huge full-page plates are the glory of this book. There are 106 in full colour, many heighted with gold and silver demonstrating the vibrant Art of Heraldry.

Frederic Chopin: His life and Letters.
Karasowski, Moritz (trans Emily Hill).

William Reeves, London, 1938. 3rd, First Single Volume Edition, Expanded. Thick 12mo, xvi + 479pp. Fourteen illustrations including new ones, one folding, as called for. Publisher's Boards as issued. Book Condition: At the bottom of the spine the torn dust-wrapper has allowed the sun to fade a small area, otherwise fine. (See images). It is free of foxing and annotations. This edition, which is unabridged, is the first one-volume edition with additional letters and illustrations. The author claimed to have corrected several errors which appeared in the earlier editions and to have been able to sketch more of Chopin’s early life from information obtained from his one surviving sister. The translator of this unabridged edition has drawn attention to the fact that letters from the composer’s time in England and Scotland in 1848 and 1849 have yielded extra material never before included in a work on Chopin. The illustrations include a facsimile of a prelude and a view of a bronze cast of his left hand which shows his very long fingers. A very nice copy of this uncommon book.

Maria - an operatic biography
London Weekend Television

The booklet is about the program made by Tony Palmer called Maria - an operatic biography. Alan Sievewright was the interviewer and John Ardoin was the executive producer. Melvyn Bragg was the program editor. The booklet is just 12 pages in oblong folio format in English and French and includes many photographs. The film was broadcast on October 4 1987 so the undated booklet must be of that year. Alan Sievewright was a designer, artist, impresario and friend of the stars of theatre, film and opera. Sievewright co-produced a TV documentary, Maria, for which both he and the director, Tony Palmer, won awards. He also coached Jane Seymour for her role in Callas in the US TV series Ari, for which she won an Emmy. Sievewright also presented his own programme, Callas Sings Again, which he toured worldwide. And he starred with Judi Dench, Plácido Domingo and Franco Zeffirelli in Maria Callas: Living and Dying for Art and Love (2004) which tells the story of the staging of Franco Zeffirelli's 'Tosca' with Maria Callas at Covent Garden. John Ardoin was best known as the music critic of The Dallas Morning News for thirty-two years and especially for his friendship with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the work of the famous opera soprano, Maria Callas, about whom he wrote four books. Very good condition.

The Craft and Design of Monumental Brasses.
Trivick, H.H.

Book Description: John Baker, London, 1969. Hardcover with dust-wrapper, first edition, quarto, 152 pp. 85 plates, illustrations (many in brass effect) coats of arms, map. Book Condition: Good. Slight groove to upper board. The brass effect illustrations have taken some offsetting from the printed pages opposite. Dust Jacket Condition: Good, not price clipped. A little nibbled along the top especially around the spine. No book, before the present volume, has reproduced monumental brasses in gilt and black as they were originally laid down. The medieval craftsman conceived, designed and engraved brass effigies and inscriptions as incised, linear designs on a brass gilt surface, the incised line was filled in with a black composition when the engraving was finished. The positive view, as here illustrated, is the only meaningful way of viewing brasses. Mr Trivick writes as a practising authority on his subject and also as an artist interested in creation. The author brings out what may be learned of the medieval craftsman, as he lived, thought and worked, and how this affected the designs of monumental brasses. The book includes a chapter on brass-rubbing techniques and a county list of outstanding or unusual brasses, as well as a bibliography and an index. Four images.
