A Review of the Proceedings at Paris during the last summer, 1791. Fennell, James.
Including an exact and particular account of the memorable events, on the 20th of June, the 14th of July, the 10th of August, and the 2d of September: with Observations and Reflections on the Characters, Principles and Conduct of the most conspicuous persons concerned in promoting the suspension and dethronement of Louis the Sixteenth. Printed in London for E. and T. Williams, No. 13; Strand. viii, 492pp. 1792. The sole edition. James Fennell, 1766-1816, was an English actor, who made his first appearance in 1787 at the Edinburgh theatre. In the summer of 1791 he travelled to Paris during the period when Louis the XVI’s powers were suspended by the National Assembly. His original design was to stage a play ‘The Picture of Paris’. It went into rehearsal in the winter of 1791, but was never performed. Educated at Eton, and Trinity College Cambridge, and with an early training in law, Fennell was well equipped to offer an important and detailed first-hand account of the momentous events unfolding before him. In 1794 he emigrated to America, publishing An Apology for the Life of James Fennell (Philadelphia, 1814). Post octavo. (8in x 5in). This volume is in excellent condition. It is bound in three quarter calf with matching cloth. No shelf wear. The spine has gilt rulings, titling and ornaments. Text clean throughout save for two short marginal notes and two short marginal lines; all in a very old hand. All edges coloured. This looks to be an early twentieth century rebind when owned by Fritz Ponsonby of the Grenadier Guards (1867 - 1935) who became the first Baron Sysonby, whose the engraved bookplate is on the pastedown and who wrote the definitive three volume history of the Grenadier Guards. A very scarce book. Larger image 1 : Larger Image 2 : Larger Image 3 : Larger Image 4 Ref 10526 : £180

Maria - an operatic biography London Weekend Television
The booklet is about the program made by Tony Palmer called Maria - an operatic biography. Alan Sievewright was the interviewer and John Ardoin was the executive producer. Melvyn Bragg was the program editor. The booklet is just 12 pages in oblong folio format in English and French and includes many photographs. The film was broadcast on October 4 1987 so the undated booklet must be of that year. Alan Sievewright was a designer, artist, impresario and friend of the stars of theatre, film and opera. Sievewright co-produced a TV documentary, Maria, for which both he and the director, Tony Palmer, won awards. He also coached Jane Seymour for her role in Callas in the US TV series Ari, for which she won an Emmy. Sievewright also presented his own programme, Callas Sings Again, which he toured worldwide. And he starred with Judi Dench, Plácido Domingo and Franco Zeffirelli in Maria Callas: Living and Dying for Art and Love (2004) which tells the story of the staging of Franco Zeffirelli's 'Tosca' with Maria Callas at Covent Garden. John Ardoin was best known as the music critic of The Dallas Morning News for thirty-two years and especially for his friendship with an encyclopaedic knowledge of the work of the famous opera soprano, Maria Callas, about whom he wrote four books.
