A tour through Sicily and Malta. In a series of letters to William Beckford, Esq. of Somerly in Suffolk.
Brydone, Patrick.

Book Description: London: Printed for W. Strahan and T. Cadell, 1774. Hardcover, cloth, octavo, large folding printed map of Sicily and the Maltese Islands, xvi + 373 pp + (3pp) adverts. Vol 1 only, of 2. Third edition. Book Condition: Fully re-bound in green cloth with a paper label. The old boards have been re-used which leads to some unevenness and the original endpapers are a bit stained. While the prelims have some signs of damp the paper is clean and extremely crisp. The print is a delight to read being very clear and well spaced. The map is free of foxing but has a faint offsetting and two part folds repaired. A very solid book. Brydone's Tour first appeared in London in 1773, and proved so popular that it went through over twenty editions and was translated into French and German. Overcoming the difficulties of travelling in Sicily, as there are no inns in the island, and many of the roads are over dangerous precipices, or through bogs and forests, that are infested by the most resolute and daring banditti in Europe Brydone, (1736-1818), manages to cover the territory and I can vouch that his first-hand accounts make for entertaining reading with descriptions of the effects of the volcano on the economy of the island and its natural history. This copy is priced to reflect the lack of a leather binding.

Navigantium Atque Itinerantium Bibliotheca: Or, A Compleat Collection of Voyages and Travels: Consisting of above 400 of the Most Authentick Writers . Volume 2 only
Harris, John

beginning with Hackluit, Purchas, Ramusio, Thevenot, De Bry .......with CUTS of most Curious Things ....An APPENDIX of the Remarkable ACCIDENTS at Sea and Several of our Considerable ENGAGEMENTS ....Charters &c, about the East India Trade, Letters Patents, &c. The full page plates relate to the text and show the weird and the wonderful! Book Description: Thomas Bennet, John Nicholson and Daniel Midwinter, London. Printed for Thomas Bennet, John Nicholson and Daniel Midwinter, 1705. 1st Edition. Folio. (15 1/2 x 9 3/4 inches). This book was produced with eccentric pagination which I set out below. It is believed to be complete textually and has a double page map of Europe and the expected 11 full page plates (one folding) and 6 engravings in the text but lacks 3 maps and the Title and Frontis. Contents (4), 926, Pagination: 1-120; 113-163; 176-264; 301-484; (465)-(524); 501-858; 865-928. Appendix (52), Pagination: 1-28; 33-56. Indexes (12). Supplied with the volume are full size photographs of the Frontispiece and its Title with 2 photos covering the folding map of British Channel, provided by the British Library. The British Library copy also lacks 2 of the expected maps, (West Indies & Tierra del Fuego) and their copy even has the frontispieces bound in the wrong volumes! Book Condition: Original boards stripped of leather. Suit a rebind to match a volume I. Several pages have had small marginal tears repaired and 3 pages have longer tears carefully repaired. Some worm damage confined only to the margins. The volume is still in a sturdy state and held tightly together despite having no covering to the boards or the spine. This book is very rare indeed and copies that exist often have deficiencies in the maps and plates.
